scientific notation

Scientific notation is a method to handle very large or very small numbers without writing out all the place holding zeros. Simply count how many spaces you are moving the decimal point to the right or the left. There should always be one digit before the decimal point.

Examples: 5,340,000,000 is 5.34 × 109 and 0.0000000000425 is 4.25 ×10-11
