dashes

More specifically known as em-dashes, dashes act like commas with more emphasis. You can use dashes to replace commas whenever you want to create a stronger break. On the ACT, remember not to mix commas and dashes for a phrase in the middle of sentence; if you start with a dash, end with a dash.

Example: My mother—the matriarch of my extended family—rules with an iron fist.
