dependent clause

A dependent clause is a phrase that has a subject and verb but cannot stand alone as a sentence.

Examples: Because I decided to build a time machine. A professor who was known more for his quirks than knowledge. Although I have a lot of friends. (None of these can stand alone as sentences.)
